A Government for the People, Not the Politicians

By: Olayinka A. Ayuba BS.c (Comp. Sci.) MBA(ICT)

The proposed 6-year single tenure for presidents and governors is a dangerous distraction from the pressing issues plaguing Nigeria. As hunger and hardship grip the nation, our lawmakers should prioritize the welfare of Nigerians over political power plays.

This move only serves to entrench bad governance and disregard the struggles of the people. It's a threat to democratic principles and may even lead to authoritarian rule. Instead, our National Assembly must address the pressing concerns of food insecurity, poverty, lack of access to healthcare and education, unemployment, corruption, insecurity, infrastructure decay, and economic instability.

Nigerians are crying out for relief from the crushing burden of poverty, for affordable healthcare, for quality education, and for opportunities to better their lives. Our lawmakers must listen to these cries and work to alleviate the suffering of the people.

We need a government that is responsive, accountable, and transparent, one that prioritizes the needs of the people over personal interests, creates an enabling environment for businesses to thrive, and fosters job creation and economic growth.

Let us reject this self-serving proposal and demand a government that truly serves the people. Our lawmakers must put the needs of Nigerians first, not personal interests. The future of our nation depends on it. We must rise up and demand a better deal for ourselves, our children, and our country. Enough is enough!
